I think a theme is basically all in the text, if it can be proved by the text it can be considered a theme. A theme to me is like the lesson or message of a book.
It is important to understand a theme because if you don't understand the message or lesson of a book what's the purpose of reading the book.
Themes tend to also occur in the media or propaganda. Commercials especially, they're trying to get the message out saying that you should buy their product.
They occur everywhere!!
